Did you know Tamil is widely considered as one of the oldest languages still spoken by over 80 million people in the world today? Despite this history, it is one of the least researched and academically explored languages in a higher learning institution. To advance the global understanding of the Tamil language, Tamil Chair Inc. and Canadian Tamil Congress have signed an agreement with the University of Toronto to create a Tamil Chair. As Toronto is home to one of the largest diasporic Tamil populations outside of India, it is a natural decision to house the project at the University of Toronto-Scarborough campus.

December event raised $90,000 for University of Toronto Chair in Tamil Studies

Appadurai Muttulingam is proud his mother tongue is one of the world’s seven classical languages, but the Markham writer always worries how the centuries-old Tamil language and literature can be preserved without a home.
That’s why he was thrilled when the University of Toronto joined the Tamil community in the GTA earlier this year to create a chair in Tamil Studies at its Scarborough campus with the mandate to develop an academic program on Tamil language, history and culture through research and scholarship.

$700,000 collected so far, $3 million pledged

A campaign launch held at UTSC on June 25 saw people from all over the Tamil community in Canada and the United States come together to raise $700,000. The money that is being raised will set up a permanent endowment fund for the chair of Tamil Studies at U of T, who would have a focus on studying ancient to modern Tamil literature.

Tamil has been considered over the years as one of the oldest languages in the world abundantly rich with culture, tradition and civilization. Poet Bharathiyar’s dream of spreading the Tami language around the world is now becoming a reality in North America. The establishment of a Tamil Chair by the University of Toronto follows in the footsteps of a newly created Tamil Chair at another world class University, namely the Harvard University in Cambridge, USA. A sum of $6 million was raised recently throughout the world for the Harvard University Tamil Chair.

மருத்துவர் போல் ஜோசப் அவர்களின் இரு நூல்கள் 14 ஒக்ரோபர் 2018 அன்று மாலை ரொறொன்ரோவில் வெளியிடப்பட்டன. சமீபத்தில் நடந்தவெளியீட்டு விழாக்களில் என்னை மிகவும் கவர்ந்த விழா இது. ’நலம் நலமறிய ஆவல்’ ‘அகவிதைகள்’ ஆகிய இருநூல்கள் வெளியிப்பட்டன. இந்தநூல்களை அறிமுகம் செய்தவர்களும், ஆய்வுரை ஆற்றியவர்களும் தம் கடமைகளை மிகச் சிறப்பாகச் செய்து முடித்தனர். திரு பொன்னையாவிவேகானந்தன் தன் உரையின்போது ரொறொன்ரோ பல்கலைக்கழக தமிழ் இருக்கை பற்றி விரிவாக எடுத்துரைத்தார். வருகையாளர்களில்பலர் தமிழ் இருக்கைக்கு நன்கொடை வழங்கி தங்கள் ஆதரவினை தெரிவித்தனர்.

பேராதனை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் மூத்த விரிவுரையாளராக பணியாற்றும் கலாநிதி ஸ்ரீ. பிரசாந்தன் ஒக்ரோபர் 11ம் தேதி மாலை ’கம்பரின்கவிநயம்’ என்ற தலைப்பில் ரொறொன்ரோவில் உரையாற்றினார். ஏறக்குறைய ஒரு மணி நேரம் பேசினார். என் வாழ்வில் நான் கேட்ட மிகச்சிறந்த உரைகளில் இதுவும் ஒன்று எனச் சொல்லலாம். பேச்சின் நடுவே ரொறொன்ரோ தமிழ் இருக்கையின் முக்கியத்துவம் பற்றியும் பேசினார். தமிழ் இருக்கை முதன்முதலாக அண்ணாமலைபல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் 1929ம் ஆண்டு உருவாக்கப்பட்டது. தகுந்த பேராசிரியர் ஒருவரை தமிழ் இருக்கைக்கு நியமிப்பதற்கு பெரும் தேடுதல்நடந்தது. இறுதியில் விபுலாநந்த அடிகள்தான் இதற்கு உகந்தவர் எனத் தீர்மானித்து அவரை நியமித்தார்கள். முதலாவது தமிழ் இருக்கைபேராசிரியர் ஓர் ஈழத்தவர் என்பது பெருமைக்குரியது. தமிழர்கள் அனைவரும் ஒன்றிணைந்து ரொறொன்ரோ தமிழ் இருக்கையின் வெற்றிக்குபாடுபடவேண்டும் என்றார். அவருடைய உணர்ச்சி மயமான பேச்சில் மனதைப் பறிகொடுத்தவர்கள் ரொறொன்ரோ தமிழ் இருக்கைக்குநன்கொடை வழங்கினார்கள். ஏறக்குறைய 4000 டொலர்கள் அன்று சேர்ந்தன.
